Things have been hard for years. This is not the marriage that you want or the life you signed for on your wedding day. You are about ready to throw in the towel. You can’t live like this anymore. It’s not working. In fact it hasn’t been working for awhile now. But, before you walk out, choose someone else, and move on, I have one question. Are you going to wish you had tried couples counseling?
Are you going to wish you had tried?
It can be incredibly painful to end a marriage and to separate a family unit. There is often grieving that happens during, immediately after, and far in the future. Sometimes it is the right thing to do. But sometimes it’s not. Sometimes we look back and wish we had tried.
And maybe it feels like you have tried. And maybe that’s part of your reason for wanting to throw in the towel. You’re tired of trying. But sometimes our attempts are part of the problem. Sometimes we need an innovative solution. That’s where an experienced couples therapist can be helpful.
Is it too late for couples counseling?
Imagine that there are two doors side by side. If you go through the first door, your future self will be able to live happily with your current spouse and have a far better future than you are having at present. But if you go through the second door, your marriage will be over. Which door would you choose? Would you hesitate?
If you cannot imagine walking through the first door, couples counseling won’t work. It takes some level of investment from both partners to repair the relationship. But if you would hesitate or choose the first door, it might be worth seeing a Marriage and Family Therapist or qualified couples therapist who can help you on your journey.
If you decide to take this journey, please make sure that the therapist you choose is either a MFT (Marriage and Family Therapist) or has significant post graduate experience and training in couples counseling. I don’t want you to have more failed attempts at repairing your relationship. I want you and your partner to have the best chance and happiness, connection, and love. If there is anything that I can do to help you on your journey, please reach out
