As a native Philadelphian, Fourth of July has a special place in my heart. I gained so much of my take-no-shit attitude from the culture of our nation’s birthplace. Our founding fathers believed so fiercely in this country that they risked their lives to achieve its independence. Fighting for their values took a lot of courage and required them to step out of their comfort zone. But how miraculous is independence (from tyranny, self-defeating thoughts, negative marital patterns, toxic relationships, or an abusive work environment)?
As a nation, July Fourth is our Independence Day. We celebrate with barbecues, loved ones, and fireworks. But, as individuals, we often have our own, more personal independence days. Maybe it was the day you left an unhealthy relationship, moved out onto your own, or stopped letting others dictate your life. Perhaps it was the day you stopped drinking, got control of your eating disorder, or pulled out of a major mood episode. Whatever it was, it is worth celebrating. It’s the day you took control of your own life instead of letting life circumstances control you.
Declare Today Your Independence Day
Perhaps you haven’t gotten there yet. But you’re at the point where the thought of changing is less scary than the thought of staying stuck. Maybe today will be your independence day. The day you decide you’re tired of the negative self talk, low self-esteem, and constant self-doubt. The day you decide that your relationship can’t keep going the way it is and you need some guidance to get it back on track. It’s not working for you. You’re ready for a change.
As a therapist, I help people fulfill their dreams—whether that be a happy marriage, a satisfying life, or raising kids that they want to be friends with as adults. I work with individuals, couples, and families to gain independence from the thoughts and patterns that keep them stuck. Together we work to improve their lives and the relationships that matter to them the most.
As you celebrate this holiday, see where you can find inspiration and motivation to be the best version of you. For me it’s watching the fireworks and noticing that they are bold, unapologetic, and beautiful. We all deserve to take up space and show our true selves to the world. Your true self is beautiful.
